Witchy Wednesdays - Tomato The tomato is an iconic red, yellow or orange spherical fruit (although other colours and varieties can be grown), native to South America but can be grown worldwide. They are often grown from big bushy plants, light green in nature or in the case of certain types from vines. They are a member of the nightshade family along with the potato and aubergine. The botanical name for tomatoes means “edible wolf peach”. In 1820, Robert Johnson of New Jersey proclaimed that he was going to publicly consume a tomato. People came from miles around to see what they were sure was a ludicrous act that would end in a horrifying death and of course he ‘miraculously’ survived. As we all know tomatoes are great eaten raw or cooked in a variety of recipes and dishes from the modest tomato ketchup to the fried green tomatoes of America and the rich Italian pasta dishes, however there is more to the humble tomato than meets the eye. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, lycopene (an antioxidant), potassium and citric acid making them a priceless addition to the diet for the general maintenance of health. They aid in liver function and help clean the body of environmental toxins. They are also said to aid in the digestion of fatty foods and help maintain the health of the circulatory system. They are also excellent for re-hydration after a fast or strenuous exercise. Magickally Putting one on the window sill will prevent evil from entering the house. tomatoes can be used in place of apples in many magical spells. They can also be used in place of other members of the nightshade family. They also make great items for offerings. To bring prosperity into your home place a bright red, ripe tomato on your mantle or in the centre of your kitchen table for three days. Use and replace after three days.
