Witchy Wednesdays - Daisy Daisy is a term used to describe a large number of flowering plants with the most common being the english daisy or bruisewort. It has a small but strong stalk with a white petaled flower surrounding the yellow pollen, its leaves are rounded and are described as spoon like, Its a very iconic looking flower, but in most cases it is considered a weed. In ancient Rome, the surgeons who accompanied Roman legions into battle would order their slaves to pick sacks full of daisies in order to extract their juice; bellum, Latin for "war", may be the origin of this plant's scientific name. Bandages were soaked in this juice and would then be used to bind sword and spear cuts and is still used in homeopathy for wounds and after certain surgical procedures. Young leaves can be eaten raw in salads or cooked, noting that the leaves become increasingly astringent with age.Flower buds and petals can be eaten raw in sandwiches, soups and salads. It is also used as a tea and as a vitamin supplement. It is often used to symbolise innocence and childhood and is used by children to make daisy chains. In Magick Daisies are suitable offerings to any Goddess and they make wonderful wreathes for wearing in the hair on Beltane or Midsummer. Sleeping with the root beneath your pillow may cause an absent love to return. Decorate the house with daisies at Midsummer’s Eve to bring happiness to the home and to obtain the blessings of faeries. Divination with daisies most commonly consists of removing each petal from the daisy while saying “she loves me, she loves me not.”
